Not sure if this has been brought up, but where are the parents? I am not saying that there is nothing wrong with watching porn or violent videos, too much of any thing can effect you. However, if the parents were watching the older boys through their life they wouldn't have had the chance to watch that kind of entertainment. Also, if the parents were there these boys would have had talks with their parents about these forms of entertainment.

I believe that people should hide things from children. That just leaves them unable to deal with those issues when they encounter them. The idea that these forms of entertainment were not healthy should have been placed into the these boys minds by the time they were sixteen. I would certain have this talk with my children before they started hanging out with other teens, because I have no way of knowing if the other teens have had similar talks with their parents. In short prepare your children for what they might encounter when you are not there.

This is an interesting (June 27, 2010) from a newspaper, Boston Globe, about the 1982 arson case. The arson experts pointed out all of the errors in the investigation that was conducted at that time, by the police's arson specialist. This specialist called himself an expert, and was (he's dead now) adamant that he was not wrong.

I think that we should take care about generalizing the experts. It's usually the experts who would point out the errors (usually when their colleagues make them, and sometimes when they themselves made them). That's science for ya... a constant self-correcting process. Doesn't mean that it's no good.

.

I was raped when I was a teenager by a guy from my fathers rugby club. It wasn't because he watched porn videos it was because he lusted after teenagers ! (and probably the dirty sexist rugby songs they sang didn't help either)

Rape and violence have been around for centuries. I don't think porn videos make a lot of difference - I used to watch porn videos occasionally with my boyfriend when I was at Uni - and neither of us went around raping people!

Here's one expert who says that porn consumption has caused rape to decrease:

Here's another who says porn consumption has nothing to do with rape:

Here's another expert who says that the availability of porn decreases rape:

Re: the arson references, here are some articles about the Lime Street Fire, which revolutionized the science of arson investigation and demonstrated that many, many innocent people have been falsely convicted of arson under the old methods.

The point is that experts can be wrong, and that many people in this thread are not going to believe a couple of guys who allegedly appeared on television, claimed to be experts, and proceeded to spout a bunch of unsubstantiated nonsense.

i once read these accounts of lives of boys at English boarding schools in the early 20th century late 19th. they were full of older boys raping younger ones, making them masturbate the older boys, how they used butter as lube etc. very graphic and seemingly very wide spread. one would have a very hard time finding any outside media influence that could have sparked this sort of behaviour at that time. even in my own life growing up before the Internet porn was a pretty rare thing yet all sorts of atrocities took place.

Rape has been widespread, I guess. But then so has sex. I personally don't believe that porn makes you into a rapist. It certainly hasn't turned myself into a rapist.
