Narcissistic Youtube?

Postby Thaibebop » Tue Jul 27, 2010 5:26 pm

Hello all,
Okay, so I am finishing my undergrad work this fall, it will be an easy semester, and I am applying to several universities for grad school. I am mostly at home with my girls while my wife works. This is the least busiest I have been for four years. So, I started thinking I needed to full fill a creative need. I am usually writing a lot for my research papers but now with no papers to work on I need to keep doing something. So, I have started writing fiction again and started challenge myself to write out ideas I have into something clear and nicely put into word. Like an idea I have about human behavior or something.

I always have started playing with the family's video camera. I wanted to get some imagines of the local landscape moving instead of still photos to take with me when we leave. That's when I had the idea to combine what I was writing with what I was taping. I thought it would be fun and challenge myself a bit. What do I do with them, is a question I keep asking myself.

Which is why I am posting this. I enjoy watching some people on Youtube but I find the idea of making videos for Youtube somewhat narcissistic, an excerise in pure ego, regardless of what the content of the video might be. Just because I create something doesn't mean I have to share with people. Why do I think it deserves to be shared anyway? However, why create something just so it sits in my hard drive?

I don't see why I should do it, but I also have trouble seeing why I shouldn't. What do you guys think? Would you share your creativity in this fashion? Do you think there would be a benefit or because the internet is the internet it would do more damage then good to taming the monkey mind?

Thank you!

Having something to say that you would like to share is not narcissistic, especially when it's a creative expression.

You think too much!

Why would you believe it should not be shared? Do you have nothing worthwhile to say?

You know your intent-- my impression of which is that you are not making a video simply to see your own face and hear your own voice, which would better fit the definition of narcissism.

I happen to follow a guy on YouTube who makes simply wonderful videos with Rumi poems.

Images, music and voice are so beautiful...I thought something like this with a chapter from the Dhammapada...
Really? What's his channel?

Oh, ok! No, I wasn't aware of her.

I agree: why add to the noise.

But spreading the Dhamma with nice nature images would be lovely for you, wouldn't it? Perhaps that would give you great joy? And others?
A lot of people do that as well, so that might just be like adding to the noise also.

If you think the Dhamma is noise, then don't publish it on YouTube.

Do one just for yourself, to rejoice in it.

Thaibepop, the "market" is overcrowded, the world is overpopulated. So many wish to have attention or appreciation of the crowd. But can they?

I don't think that should be a point of consideration though, to stand out of the crowd, unless you want to make money with it.

If you would like to do a video, make one, and if too many concerns arise, don't.

I wouldn't overthink it too much.

Just be like a kid, play with it, that is an attribute of all artists...creativity is spontaneous, intuitive, enthusiastic, playful.

Don't be your own killjoy.

I wish I could do that...

Good advice, Anna.
Time for me to start my own thread. Just for fun.

How could you possibly know what you will do with it until you make it?....make it first...then decide what to do with it. I took this approach when I was learning to make silver jewelry and I ended up with a collection of really neat small silver objects none of which is recongnizable as "jewelry"...a collection which I still have today and which means more to me than any of the real "jewelry" which I also made sparingly at the same time.

Also, this collection of small silver objects has practical value as well.....if I show it to someone they will usually either say "wow" or they will say "what is it"......this gives me a quick peak into their psyche....

Never overplan your art.
