Most important bit of dharma?

Postby Spiny Norman » Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:38 am

What in your view is the most important bit of dharma?

Please select one item only from the various lists, eg one element from the 8-fold path, or one of the 3 characteristics or 5 precepts, etc.

I'm going for the 3rd Noble Truth.

Non-self

To study is to know the texts,
To practice is to know your defilements,
To attain the goal is to know and let go.

How can I choose only one?

Okay, easy:

Samma Ditthi (Right Understanding)

That covers everything; understanding of the Four Noble Truths, the way to end suffering, and the Path out of suffering.

The Buddha seemed to hint that Paticca-samuppada what the single most important concept of understanding the Dhamma.

But with the state of the world at present, I'd have to say the most important thing the Dhamma has to offer right now is Compassion.

The most important bit is the one that you're able to make use of at the moment.

Thag 1.20. Ajita - I do not fear death; nor do I long for life. I’ll lay down this body, aware and mindful.
