Omamori

Quick question, hopefully someone will know, but I recently visited a Shingon temple and got sevel Omamori from them. I remember it was a Japanese custom to replace them annually..so would they technically expire next month? Or a year from when you get them? Perhaps just patently foolish to buy them in December? Thanks so much.

Omamori are thought to expire after one year of use (doesn't apply to all kinds of Omamori). Because they are normally burned at the end of the year, you can given them to a temple for disposal at the end of 2012.
