Path to Stream Entry

Postby Guy » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:28 pm

Hi Friends,

How can we determine whether or not we are on the path to Stream-Entry? Is it possible for anyone to accurately say so, other than a Buddha?

"To reach beyond fear and danger we must sharpen and widen our vision. We have to pierce through the deceptions that lull us into a comfortable complacency, to take a straight look down into the depths of our existence, without turning away uneasily or running after distractions." -- Bhikkhu Bodhi

Don't wory about it, you will know when you get there!

aim for the tradition of the noble ones, not the tradition of the worlds

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

even if you know you're there, it helps to be sceptical!

There are some areas we need to broadly work on- sila-morality in being able to keep the precepts (and seeing the value in precepts) is a main area.

The other areas are the insight elements noted in the okkanta samyuta as Kenshou mentioned. This requires wife reflection (yonisomanasikara) as well as satipatthana practice ('practice according to the dhamma' - dhammanudhamma patipada)To get to that insight level a certain degree of samadhi-unifcation of mind is required.

The faith-confidence element is also important as cause -as well as effect, of the practices above.
