How's life in New Zealand?

Postby dragonwarrior » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:26 pm

Hi everyone and Hi Kiwi friends!
New Zealand is a very charming country. I really hope that I can do my internship in NZ next year (I hope it will be in Christchurch). Please, tell me about life in New Zealand. About the safety, living expenses, the people, climate, Buddhism, and of course the nature.

Cheers!

Hi Winny,

Welcome! :anjali:

http://www.christchurch.org.nz/

Not sure where to start. Christchurch will probably seem small, quiet and cold compared to Indonesia, but it's large enough to be interesting, and the countryside is pretty stunning in places. Not particularly unsafe unless you are in the wrong places at the wrong times. For students here (like visiting PhD students I've known) I'd say about 150000 NZD is enough to be comfortable. Less than about 12000 NZD would be difficult.

A lot more Asian people here than there used to be, but I don't see a lot of Indonesians. There are Thai and Sri Lankan monasteries, but the largest Asian presence is Chinese.

What sort of internship is this?

I'd be happy to answer more detailed questions by PM.

Mike

Greetings Winny,

Certainly colder than what you're used to!

Hi Winny

NZ is a beautiful country. I visit just about every-other year as my father-in-law lives just south of Auckland.
New Zealanders are very friendly - even to visiting Australians!
It looks like I might be visiting again this Dec/Jan Christmas/New Years period.
kind regards

Ben

Hi Winny

I've only visited NZ very briefly.... was in Christchurch last year. Met up with Mike who very generously took time to show me around. :) Coming from a Southeast Asian city similar to yours (I'm assuming you are living in a metropolitan city in Indonesia), what I appreciate most about migrating to Australia and visiting places like NZ is the space to breathe, both literally and metaphorically. NZ is not only beautiful but also very conducive for stillness. All the best.
With metta,

I'm guessing Mike meant NZ$12-15,000

$150,000 is mega bucks

Yes, I was talking about 15,000NZD per year, not per month! The number of people making 15,000NZD per month would be rather small. A full time job on the minimum wage would be something like 27,000NZD per year.

Typical wages/costs here are comparable, but little lower, than Australia.

Hi, Winny,
I was just browsing Flickr and came across a group dedicated to NZ - some magnificent photos. Start here , for instance.
