Karma erasing mantra

Post by ChangYuan »

So, I have a card for Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and it has the "karma erasing mantra" on the back. It is: om ba la mo ling to ning svaha
Does anyone have much knowledge of this? Also, is there anyone good with pidgin that could help me with pronunciation?

Known as: 地藏菩萨灭定业真言 / dì zàng pú sà miè dìng yè zhēn yán
Chinese/pinyin:唵,钵啰末邻陀宁,娑婆诃 / ǎn bō luō mò lín tuó nìng suō pó hē

In Sanskrit: (sorry no proper sanskrit diacritical marks available)
Om Pramardani Svaha

From what I have learned from others, this Mantra has the function to eradicate heavy unwholesome karma and is recited especially for those who are in the three lower paths of rebirth: hell, animals and hungry ghosts to aid them in escaping from those unfortunate states and to encounter the Buddha Dharma again for their liberation but also an excellent practice for us to eradicate our own heavy karma,
consonant with the deep and great compassionate vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

From my own practice and experience, in the Chinese Mahayana circles, this Mantra is often recited together with the 'The Sutra on Past Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva' after each Part (Beginning Part: Chapters 1-4, Middle Part: 5-9, Ending Part:10-13) from once or thrice or sevenfold times.

There used to be detailed explanations on this Mantra in the defunct E-Sangha's 'East Asian Buddhism General Forum' but even when using the archive.org site, the link is not retrievable. See: http://web.archive.org/web/200712111122 ... opic=41012" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (under 'allenc48 Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva Mantra for Eradicating De...Jun 28 2007, 12:48PM')
However, I have found a Chinese link here: http://www.dizang.org/zy/dzzy.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(Perhaps someone else could help you decipher that or you could read it, if familiar with Chinese)
