The Musical Comedy of Tom Leher

Postby BubbaBuddhist » Mon Jun 14, 2010 12:49 am

Tom Lehrer was until his recent retirement at an age somewhere in his eighties a professor of Mathematics at Harvard who back in the 50's and 60's composed and performed some very hilarious political and satirical humor. He also composed songs for Garrison Keilor's A Prairie Home Companion and the PBS show The Electric Company. I always thought of him as the darker Gershwin Brother. :P At any rate, I always considered him a musical and comedy genius and was delighted when a friend presented me with a recent DVD release of one of his concerts. I looked on You Tube and found some of my favorites. I'm sure many of you know of him, If not, you're in for a treat. Here are the links. Enjoy them:

... and who could forget his setting of the Periodic Table to 'The Major-General's Song' from Gilbert and Sullivan's 1879 comic opera 'The Pirates of Penzance'?

Or his introduction to New Math?

His classes must have been a hoot ...

I know it is very unkosher in Buddhist terms but " Poisoning The Pigeons In The Park " never fails to amuse me.
