To elaborate, precepts in general are guidelines for practitioners to assist in their practice and well being. All Buddhists in general make a pledge to not commit these deeds in one's present life. It may not always be easy, but by just continuing to practice, gradually it will help us to be better persons.
“Although people know the word’s characteristic, they have never ascertained the truth of the word. Thus they are beings in samsara. The tathagata knows the true meaning and is thus named as enlightened."
