The jail stats for the U.S. are pretty incredible - 25% of the global jail population is in the U.S. and when you break it down according to colour/race the figures look even worse. On top of that is the work they do for very little money, its a form of legalized slavery.

However, it is not completely a case of racial discrimination. Seven of the twelve jurors who originally convicted him were Black. But race may have played a part in his denials for appeals and for the higher authorities not granting clemency.
According to the bio info, he had a gun without a permit less than a year from the time of the murder. But there was no physical evidence tying him to the crime scene. And 7 of 9 witnesses later changed their testimony. There probably was enough reasonable doubt to at least have a new trial. Guilty or not, though, he should not have been killed.
