Foguangshan in Taiwan is building a massive Buddha statue and ziggurat-like structure to house a tooth relic of the Buddha.

Is there a chemical agent that will will gradually erode the statue so that the last erosion will be complete during the 1000th year? do the plans for the statue indicate that it should be demolished in a 1000 years? Or, is it a simple expression to indicate its abiding, durable composition?

Like Namdrol said, maybe you should ask the people who are proposing to build this monumant, along with a somewhat smaller one outside Bodhgaya.

In fact, if you live in the right city, FPMT raises funds for this project by touring a collection of relics. If the tour comes to a place near you, go check out the relics and ask the attendants that question.

What is the status of this project? I know they have been working on it for years. At the beginning it was slated for Bodh Gaya, but then had to move the project to Kushinagar.

I like Buddhist monuments. I know they are expensive, but they inspire the faithful and can pique interest in those who have no knowledge of the Buddha-Dharma.

I have seen tourist buses come to visit simply to see the Great Stupa there.
