Four types of attention (Tib.)

Post by sangyey »

Does anyone know or know where I can find the translation for the 4 types of attention (yid-la byed pa) i.e., tight focus, intermittent focus, uninterrupted focus, and spontaneous focus?

It looks like you already have the English translations of these terms. If you're looking for the Tibetan terms they are:

1. bsgrim ste 'jug pa (Skt. balavāhana)
2. bar du chad cing 'jug pa (Skt. sacchidravāhana)
3. chad pa med par 'jug pa (Skt. niśchidravāhana)
4. lhun grub tu 'jug pa (Skt. anābhogavāhana)

See: Four mental engagements.

If you're looking for an explanation of these terms and how they relate to the nine mental abidings, see Dakpo Tashi Namgyal's Mahāmudrā: The Moonlight -- Quintessence of Mind and Meditation, pp. 49-50, and Je Tsongkhapa's The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, Vol. 3, pp. 78-79.

All the best,

Geoff
