Hello from Chicago

Postby mettafuture » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:24 pm

I'm known as SecularFuture and MettaFuture on the handful of message boards that I frequent. I've experimented with many religions and philosophies over the years: atheism, agnosticism, secular humanism, transhumanism, pantheism, theravada buddhism, taoism, and now soto zen buddhism. I join this here theravadin board cuzz I still likes me some of that tipitaka jargon!

Hello.

Welcome! You will find plenty of jargon here

hi & Welcom
:anjali:

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

Hello MettaFuture,

Welcome to DhammaWheel!

I think it's good to explore different schools of thought and find one which resonates, it's much easier that re-inventing (or perhaps, rediscovering) the wheel. I have enjoyed a similar smorgasbord of religions/philosophies on my way to Theravada. I hope that you find whatever it is that you are looking for.

With Metta,

Four types of letting go:

1) Giving; expecting nothing back in return
2) Throwing things away
3) Contentment; wanting to be here, not wanting to be anywhere else
4) "Teflon Mind"; having a mind which doesn't accumulate things

What made you decide to come back to Buddhism? If I remember correctly, you were dissatisfied with it when you posted on a non Buddhist forum.
Though one may conquer a thousand times a thousand men in battle, yet he is indeed the noblest victor who conquers himself. ---Dhp 103

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”

but great rivers flow silently.
