Fox News: Tiger Woods Must Become Christian To Be Forgiven - Dhamma Wheel
A Buddhist discussion forum on the Dhamma of the Theravāda
I just shook my head and sighed. Why, really? Why do people feel the need to say such things? Why do people feel the need to make comments at all on the personal doings of some one else's life? I don't think Tiger Woods marriage is news worthy, bad or good. Leave them along to solve their suffering and stop making judgment calls.
Well, to be forgiven requires a forgiver. In Christianity there is a God figure who offers forgiveness of 'sins'. In Buddhism, your kamma is your own baggage to carry. I suppose in that way this news commentator is right to say that Buddhism does not offer forgiveness... but forgiveness is moot anyway. All this is is another example of a Christian projecting their own religious ideas onto Buddhism and finding it lacking. He might as well have said 'only Christianity offers Christian forgiveness'. Well duh! Not sure why any Buddhist would be upset by this... Buddhism doesn't offer Christian forgiveness.
I'm reminded of a Run DMC song (you be illin') in which a man goes into KFC and orders a Big Mac.
He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.' (Jhana Sutta - Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation)
