Not at all. For a real counter-culture you need the numbers. At best, for purposes of your discussion, we can maybe regard Buddhism as a "new Western counter religion", but no more than that. And even then you will have to deal with atheism/humanism first, as a more deserving title-holder of even that redefined goal.

There is a kind of "counter" in ones own prefered colors of buddhism. Than what is fitting my ideas from the east is corrected by MY investigations, what fit not, I reject. Also aversion-attachment; the intellectual versus simplicity-faith (this gives doubts for insight by the academici). Reminds me at the Hindu Eknath. Taking the teachings, path as the truth.

Important as the aversion-attachment in preferences of paths(exotic appearing or not) must be seen in investigations or Buddhism becomes merely a phylosophical samsara-game.

if not then Buddhism has been co-opted into dualism, a worldly desire of self satisfaction, greed and betterment, and a fake teaching of degeneration to placate a desire induced western micro managed lifestyle realm.

I find more merit in looking at the world (loka) as defined by the Buddha (i.e. five aggregates) and whether there is a "swing in the play of dark and light" there.

Sociology is fine and all, but it's only generalisations and abstractions... rules of thumb and observation rooted in conceptual proliferation.
