The Red Cross warns that the tsunami wave caused by the quake is currently higher than some Pacific islands and "could go right over them".

I am in Kathmandu right now and a few hours ago I was attending a dharma class where impermanence was being discussed. The earthquake and resulting tsunami were brought up as examples of the principle in real life. This is where I heard about it first.

Life is short. As the Tibetans say, "Tomorrow morning or your next life!"

May Japan have a speedy recovery. May the dead find favorable rebirths.

These are comments made by an old friend of mine, now a rice farmer in Nagano. He's OK, but from the mountain he sees this:
Tonight is going to be a long, long night for thousands of Japanese. Imagine being stuck on the 2nd floor of your house, the first floor inundated with water - water as far as the eye can see - a continuous stream of waves bashing against the outer walls...no electricity, no food, no water, no cell phone service and fires burning in the distance. An apt description of hell I would say.
I'm sitting here, staring at my TV, listening as more and more reports come in. More tsunamis are coming, more expected. Sad, sad 'just ins' about how 23 middle school kids were washed away, untold hundreds missing, 2 dead here, 3 there, 4 there - some by fire, some by water, some by falling debris. It's horrible.
And it's coming to the Philippines, and the rest of the Pacific. Let's be mindful of this.

May those bereaved and traumatised by the tsunami find solace, may those who lost their lives have good rebirths,
may Japan quickly recover.

Actually, it now looks like areas to the north and south will be spared. Most of the energy (in the form of tsunami waves) has been projected to the west and east of the fault line. Have a look at the image below of quakes recorded in recent days along this line. Tohoku (Sendai and environs) has taken the biggest hit. We don't know how badly Hawaii will be affected but the islands are the biggest land areas to the east. The waves are due to arrive there in a couple of hours, but they will have had ample warning and much of the force will have dissipated by then.

May all those affected find comfort, quickly.

Latest News via NHK: About 200-300 corpses have been found along a coast in Sendai, which has bore the brunt of the earthquake. Please dedicate merits, thank you. :crying:
Contemplating the power of Tathagata's Primal Vow,
One sees that no foolish being who encounters it passes by in vain.

It brings quickly to fullness and perfection [in that person] the great treasure ocean of true and real virtues.

Reports say that 9500 from one town, Minamisanriku, are missing.

Minamisanriku has a normal population of about 21,000.

This is what their train station looked like before the earthquake and tsunami --

Here is the town's official homepage --

The last entry in the "News and Announcements" section is for the opening of a an exhibit at the local silk museum.

I wish I could help these people.

That means they are dead, unfortunately.
