April 4, 2011, at Lumbini, Nepal, birthplace of Buddha.
The center has two names: Lumbini Udyana Mahachaitya, and World Center for Peace and Unity. It is designed and guided by H.E. Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche, a prominent lineage holder of Karma Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism, and a Harvard PhD.
Built in the UN protected Lumbini Development Project area at the World Heritage Site of Lumbini, the center would represent all the friends and devotees of Buddhism who are not represented by any other temple of center on the project ground, without sectarian bias. You can read more about the overall UN development project at the website of the Lumbini Development Trust.
The center or temple has an innovative design blending ancient and contemporary architecture. It is built in the shape of a great stupa, with indoor walkway for circumambulation. See more about the center at http://www.lumbiniworld.org.
Students and friends have started registering for participation in the opening ceremony and the following retreat, and pilgrimage.
Dharmakaya, a non-profit organization based in the U.S., under the guidance of Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche, is offering people of Buddhist interest a chance to win a free to trip to Nepal and be at the opening as a special guest. You can enter from here: http://dharmakaya.org/winnepaltrip/.
Be inspired, and good luck!
