Buddhism in Second Life

Postby DGA » Mon Feb 07, 2011 5:46 pm

Some time ago someone took me on a brief tour of Second Life, and we stumbled on a Buddhist site there. These are the people who own it:

I don't know much about this group. What I'd like to know is whether there are other Buddhist groups and teachers living and teaching in Second Life, and what it's like working in that environment. After reading Tom Boelstorff's rather enthusiastic book on the subject, _Coming of Age in Second Life_, I found myself... unconvinced, but curious to learn more.
I don't know anything about Hongaku Jodo.

Venerable Yuttadhammo teaches on Second Life, and in some of his video blogs he talks about his decision to engage in that forum. Not sure if that helps, but maybe that is a place to start. I know that the virtual Buddhist Center where he teaches also hosts teachers from many traditions. Click on the YouTube link below, select his "playlists", and then select his "Second Life" playlist.

I found many Buddhist temples on Second Life, and there were some verifiable Dharma teachers there. Overall I was not impressed with Second Life, and terminated my account after a few visits. Honestly, I have a hard enough time keeping up with my First Life...
