Hummingbird Hell

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

They are a pugnacious lot, also extremely vigorous and zoom about much, with little down time. So for a hummer to come to a stop, involuntarily, must be a tortuous situation.

This afternoon one of them managed to crash into a screen door. The inattentive humanoid resident did not notice his (hummers are too mean to be girls) plight for some minutes. The valiant bird had his long beak jammed into the screen and had given up the struggle. He hung there still as death - but was he? They have been known to smash into windows and die. The resident larger life form approached the pendent creature and gently pushed the quarter inch of bill on its point.

HUMMMMMMM - the tiny, power plant started up the blur of wings and off he flew.
May all seek, find & follow the Path of Buddhas.

A few times where I used to live in the forest, birds crashed into our window (even with foil cutouts taped on it!), and I had to take them somewhere in our yard, and put them under something predator-proof until they came back to reality and flew away. Was always a great feeling when they were ok..but not so nice when it was bird burial time:(
