20 Worst Charities

Post by Mr. G »

Every year those with a charitable heart and an altruistic edge take some time to give back to society through donations to various organizations. However, many charities do not fund the actual “giving” part and instead kick back most of it to fund infrastructure and administration. While this is necessary with most organizations, it can be an eye-opener when your see how much of the actual amount of your gift goes to the needy. The website Charity Navigator can also be an aid in seeing how much a charity actually gives to their purpose.

It is important to exercise wisdom and compassion when we give. With that in mind, Attorney General of Oregon John Kroger provides a list of some of the worse offending agencies nationwide and offered tips to consumers on how to donate wisely.

Examples:

Shiloh International Ministries

Average Annual Expenditures :$ $937,315 Amount used for Charitable Cause: 3.63%
La Verne, California
Purpose: to improve the quality of life of
disabled and needy children by providing
medical necessities and moral support.

Committee for Missing Children

Average Annual Expenditures: $2,758,671 Amount used for Charitable Cause: 11.51%
Lawrenceville, Georgia
Purpose: to assist in the search and recovery of missing children and educate on safety and prevention.

In the Uk one may easily add two generic groups to the list:

Privately funded schools for rich kids (we call them 'public schools') which have charitable status and aside from a few scholarships seem simply to use the status as a tax dodge for their business.

Organisations established as charities for 'religious' purposes who spend all the money on themselves in the guise of temple funds etc. They can even ask people who 'donate' to do so under Gift Aid regulations which allow the charity to claim back the income tax the donor originally paid on the money donated. Neat.

Just call your business profits 'surplus' and reinvest it in yourself and all will be well. I could name........but I won't. ;)

The UK government is examining the charitable status of the schools and religious groups, but as most of the government were educated in these expensive elitist schools they are unlikely to upset the schools - which their own kids will also attend.

I could set up a Buddhist school tomorrow and not only claim charitable stutus but also receive government funding for the number of kids attending......Hmmm.
