I was lucky enough to see this: http://gunafoundation.org/portfolio/lotv/ on KQED a few weeks ago,
and I thought it was so interesting that I got the companion book: http://shop.dharmapublishing.com/products/light-of-the-valley out from the library.
I just wanted to call attention to it, because I hadn't realized what an incredible and mind-bogglingly challenging project this was, really amazing. I was particularly impressed by Tarthang Tulku's daughter, Tsering Gellek, who oversaw the project, see: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2011/08/24/berkeley-group-restores-2000-year-old-place-of-worship/

I happened to catch that, too, on KQED. Quite a wonderful documentary that covered so much. I especially enjoyed seeing the very old techniques used for various metal working and finishing. I am also very glad they documented the whole restoration project so extensively as it will be a great help in restoring other stupas and sacred sites.

I would be glad if the place was not only renovated but also cleansed of the commerce and mindless mass sight seeing going on there. I would also appreciate if they cleaned the forrest patch around it from the tons of plastic garbage.

Because it might be renovated, but it's completely "worldlified" and they could take some effort to keep the atrocious plastic waste at least from holy places.
