But there are mummies in Japanese buddhist temples I have heard. Monks who took renounciation really too far and killed and mummified themselves in the process.

The mummies are well known fakes in that link provided, but I haven't been able to verify whether they were indeed found in a Japanese Buddhist Temple(s) or not.
The monks mummifying themselves is true and thankfully no longer practiced: Sokushinbutsu
