To my disciples, from Bishop Dr. Jongmae Park

Post by KwanSeum »

Below is some advice sent to me (in fact all whom he thought of as 'his disciples') from the top man of my order (Taego Order). Comments?

To my disciples;

Live continually as a student...
When life’s study is ended, your life is over.

Don't brag about or bemoan your history
If you only have a past...
You are currently desolate.

If people don't ask your advice then please don't press yourself to give it
because if you give advice without their permission you are as an old trumpet.

Don't pass on all the world to the new generation
A world completely handed down is like a mass produced portrait.

Find beauty...and enjoy what you find.
Have some imaginary ambitions...that will be the spice of your life.

A wise man or woman…
knows how to enjoy what they have right now.
Happiness comes... Not from the outer sources
indeed, it is created by oneself.

All the reflections…
All the illusions…
Must have a reason so find out where they come from.

Close your eyes…and keep deep breathing.
And take slowly one step back.

This is particularly evocative.

The Taego tradition is not well known in North America, but our small Tendai group shares some members with a Taego group that meets in the same building near Washington DC. Good things brewing. Here's their blog in the event people are interested:
