Chenresig Jenang initiation by HHDL italy 2014
does anyone know what jenang means? or any details of the Chenresig Jenang. and what kind of samaya commitments the Dalai Lama usually gives in Cheresig empowerments?
If the thought of demons
Never rises in your mind,
You need not fear the demon hosts around you.
It is most important to tame your mind within....
In so far as the Ultimate, or the true nature of being is concerned,
there are neither buddhas or demons.
He who frees himself from fear and hope, evil and virtue,
will realize the insubstantial and groundless nature of confusion.
Samsara will then appear as the mahamudra itself….

Jenang means "Permission ritual," and it's a type of empowerment/blessing which does not include the 4 Empowerments of Highest Yoga Tantra, but which authorizes one to engage in the development stage and recitation of a given deity or sadhana.

do you know about the commitments that come with this kind of empowerment from HHDL?

Re: Chenresig Jenang initiation by HHDL italy 2014
In my experience, HHDL is quite kind in terms of practice commitments....I don't think there will be any specific commitments.

Maybe I simply don't pay enough attention, but how often does HH the Dalai Lama give Chenrezig empowerments? I mean, I've seen him give more of the Kalachakra, and even Guhyasamaja, which strikes me as interesting. After all, he is acknowledged as an emanation of Chenrezig...
For that matter, is the Dalai Lama considered Chenrezig because that's the so-called "patron deity of Tibet"?
Frankly, the Gelukpas seem much more focused on Manjushri, so I would've thought the high Gelukpa tulkus would be considered his manifestation. Jé Tsongkhapa was (a disciple even had a vision of him as Manjushri riding a snowlion), and they have Vajrabhairava as one of their main annuttara-yoga tantric deities.

Je Rinpoche is seen as Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani, and Manjushri. Although, some people saw him as Yamantaka too.

The Four Kadampa Guru Deities are Buddha Shakyamuni, Arya Tara, Arya Avalokiteshvara and the Wisdom Protector so anyone who practises lamrim would be advised to build a strong connection with Avalokiteshvara because he is the embodiment of wisdom and lamrim is ultimately a Mahayana path.

No, it is because in a political move, the regent of the great fifth, one of the all time great scholar scoundrals in Tibetan History, Desri Sangye Gyatso, decided to promote the great fifth as such, and the appellation has stuck every since.Karma Jinpa wrote:

Kadampa after Atisha or Gelukpa after Tsongkhapa? And who's this "Wisdom Protector"? I'm genuinely curious.Tsongkhapafan wrote:The Four Kadampa Guru Deities are Buddha Shakyamuni, Arya Tara, Arya Avalokiteshvara and the Wisdom Protector so anyone who practises lamrim would be advised to build a strong connection with Avalokiteshvara because he is the embodiment of wisdom and lamrim is ultimately a Mahayana path.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Avalokita the embodiment of the loving-kindness and compassion of all the Buddhas, whereas Manjushri is the embodiment of the wisdom of all the Buddhas? Of course, the essence of all the deities being non-dual, they each have all of the enlightened qualities and are thus replete with both wisdom and compassion, being Buddhas.
Perhaps I need to focus on this non-dual nature, rather than drawing distinctions...

i think the original kadampa wisdom protector is Acala Vidyaraja.

The four deities--Sakyamuni, Tara, Avalokita, and Acala, the "wisdom protector"--are the famed Kadampa deity practices of Atisha. And of course his Lam Rim was the model for all the various subsequent Tibetan manifestations of that genre.Karma Jinpa wrote:Kadampa after Atisha or Gelukpa after Tsongkhapa? Gelukpa, after Tsong Khapa, focused on the Three Tantras and the Protectors of the Three Scopes.
Yes, Avalokita is the manifestation of the compassion of all the Buddhas, while Manjusri is said the be the manifestation of the wisdom of the Buddhas.Karma Jinpa wrote:Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Avalokita the embodiment of the loving-kindness and compassion of all the Buddhas, whereas Manjushri is the embodiment of the wisdom of all the Buddhas? One can draw accurate distinctions while understanding the essential unity of manifestations, eh? Otherwise, we couldn't have these wonderful conversations.Karma Jinpa wrote:Perhaps I need to focus on this non-dual nature, rather than drawing distinctions...

Some good news is that for those in Europe who may wish to receive the Chenrezig/Avalokiteshvara empowerment from HH Dalai Lama, but are not able to go to Italy, there will be another opportunity in Germany from August 24-26 in Hamburg.
His Holiness will teach on the "Bodhisattva's Way of Life" (Bodhisattvacaryavatara) as well as give the Avalokiteshvara initiation. A perfect opportunity to receive the initiation from an emanation of Chenrezig!

Short Wikipedia on the Kadampa wisdom protector- Acala (Tibetan Miyowa): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acala
He is the wisdom protector that Lama Atisha recommended for practitioners of the early Kadampa school. There is a collection of Sadhanas regarding the four deities of the Kadampas. Padmakara has a translation of the Miyowa practice here: http://www.padmakara.com/Four-Deities-o ... 24_34.html
Geshe Sonam told me that the lineage of these 4 deities is still held by several masters in the Gelugpa tradition. I believe Lama Zopa Rinpoche for example has given initiations and short commentaries on these practices.
