I started a similar thread to this today in the lounge, concerning my wife's family. In hindsight I hope the moderators can combine the 2 threads. My thoughts & prayers to your girlfriend & her family. My wife is from a small fishing village in northern Cebu. Bogo is the nearest big town to her village. Where is your girlfriend from.

People who can afford to should consider donating through a reputable agency such as the red cross. Even people who can't afford it can donate a small token amount- a hot meal for 4 people can make a huge difference in such circumstances.
In order to ensure my mind never comes under the power of the self-cherishing attitude,
I must obtain control over my own mind.
Therefore, amongst all empowerments, the empowerment that gives me control over my mind is the best,
and I have received the most profound empowerment with this teaching.

They've certainly got a tough road ahead of them. Over the centuries the Philippino people have proven many times that they are a tough, resilient & resourceful people. There's no doubt in my mind that with a bit of help & a touch of luck they will once more rise to the task ahead.
Good-luck & best-wishes to all concerned. Shaun.

In my wife's home village 95% of people are homeless. Unscrupulous businessmen have raised the price of a sheet of roofing iron from 200 pesos to 500 pesos/sheet. Fortunately only one life was lost in her village when a coconut tree fell on a woman. Some electricity is available from a generator. Politicians are using this disaster for political point scoring & relief goods are not always being distributed evenly, depending on which political party the local mayor belongs to. I realise there's no escape from samsara in this world, especially that dished out by Mother Nature, but I find it very sad that the men that are supposed to serve the people feel a need to add to their country men's suffering.
