I had a strange and wonderful experience in a Chinese Buddhist temple that I attend. They were doing the Ksitigarbha chant the entire day.

I was sitting there listening to them chant -- my feet and legs were aching like anything -- I was like wow! These sutras are so powerful, it's like someone is literally operating on you!

and I was looking for a job during that time, then a few days later I got a higher paying job!

I'm waiting for them to do it again so I can attend! This stuff works! :namaste:

I think this stuff destroys bad karma and creates good karma -- it's powerful!

It was as if someone had done an operation on my body -- which is why my entire body was aching at the end of the chant -- it felt it had been sliced and diced -- no wonder Buddha is called the "unexcelled surgeon"...

Hi Sraddha - the chant isn't in the sutra. What chant did they use?

Thanks!

The Sutra says recitations of Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ksitigarbha's name and various rituals to go along with that for different things. The Sutra also mentions reciting the Sutra, so it may have been that you heard. There are quite a few Ksitigarbha mantras, not only a ton in Mahayana, but Ksitigarbha has actually a less than well known higher Heruka form, not to mention different bardo practices and specific rituals for the deceased. People also recite the qualities of Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ksitigarbha, particularly the praise given by Buddha Shakyamuni. Also there are a list of Buddha's names within the Sutra that says merely reciting or taking refuge without hesitation (depending on the Buddha) will bring about this or that auspiciousness due to their vows.

Ksitigarbha is awesome :good:

Reading the sutra is a big relief for me! Feels alot safer knowing Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is always there to protect us from falling into the evil pathes!!!

Without him most of us probably are not talking about this right now!

It is good to see more translations from the Chinese! However, the woodenfish site shows they published 7 or 8 sutras between 2006 and 2008; nothing since then. Hope they will continue - but faster.
May all seek, find & follow the Path of Buddhas.

You do not care for the two existing translations by Buddhist Text Translation Society?

I don't read much from other sources right now. Especially sutras like the Shuragama sutra, I better be stable in my precepts etc first before proceeding. I also read Chinese version by the way. It's just helpful to have the english versions to be referred to sometimes when it comes to certain terms I don't understand.

By the way, the Ksitigarbha sutra also makes you really appreciate the compassion and efforts of all the gods helping us! Especially the Earth Diety, sounds like "mother nature"!!!

Thank you very much for sharing this. Master Yonghua is an amazing teacher and I have been very fortunate to have received blessings at his temple. I will definitely be reading his commentary!

I try not to share too much personal information online but I would like to share one personal story: on the day I made the first payment on my girlfriends engagement ring I glanced out the shop window and saw Master Yonghua walk by. I ran out and chased after him to pay my respects. I apologized for not going to the temple so often (they meet so early) and talked a bit about my practice. It was a casual and random encounter but I took it as a very auspicious sign that just as I was paying and getting the paperwork, that I would see such a holy monk.
