awesome quotes, thank you very much. but i am also looking for how one holds there mind while someone is speaking harshly to them. do we start meditating, do we think of impermanence? do we think metta towards them. the question is what is patience not really what are the fruits of patience. is patience just like being able to bear pain?

When someone is insulting you or abusing you, you should reflect wisely.

I strongly recommend reading the chapter on patience in Ajahn's book (translated by Nina Van Gorkom) which I linked to (and which the quotes are from).

I think that will help you to see things a lot more clearly.

All the best,

Kevin

To study is to know the texts,
To practice is to know your defilements,
To attain the goal is to know and let go.

i appreciate all the replies. apparently the practice is simple, let go of craving, let go of aversion, and maintain awareness.

I find that remembering that the person trying my patience is experiencing dukkha and caught up in the confusion themselves helps. I guess you could see this as cultivating metta but not in the abstract, but by applying a little "I wonder how things got to be this way for this person" to the situation. And then remembering all the times I was doing variations on whatever they are doing that is currently annoying me, and thinking about how I'd want to be treated. Also, a little, recognizing where losing patience leads. And finally (most important), asking myself what's arising in me that's causing the lack of patience. All while actually paying attention to whatever it is that's going on/being said! Seriously, this sounds like it would take a long time and take you away from the moment, but I find the reminders happen in the blink of an eye.
