Craving persists at unconscious levels in sleep and anaesthesia. :)

"When one thing is practiced & pursued, ignorance is abandoned, clear knowing arises, the conceit 'I am' is abandoned, latent tendencies are uprooted, fetters are abandoned. Which one thing? Mindfulness immersed in the body." -AN 1.230

Suppression would. But one is the result of a process of insight. The others are results of intoxication and a hindrance (sleepiness). And they are therefore by no means the same.

Vipassana removes the first three fetters but suppresses the remaining 7 (tadanga prahana) at stream entry where the path and fruit thought moment experience nibbana (non-arising). This is a process (and outcome of) of insights building up upon each other. This experience (conscious - of nothing at all) of nibbana is different from going to sleep or anaesthesia.
