Rejoicing in 84000 Project, many new Sutras translated

Postby JKhedrup » Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:33 am

Having recently referred to the 84000 website for my own research I have to say how much I rejoice in the project. They are translating an incredible amount of material of high quality, based mostly on the Tibetan canon but also including some translations from Classical Chinese.
for example བྱམས་པ་དགའ་ལྡན་གནས་སུ་སྐྱེ་བ་བླངས་པའི་མདོ།
The Sūtra on the Bodhisattva Maitreya Taking Birth in Tuṣita
kwan ji li’u phu sa zhang shyan te’u shis thyan kyin
'phags pa byang chub sems dpa' byams pa dga' ldan gnas su skye ba blangs pa'i mdo
The Noble Sūtra 'The Bodhisattva Maitreya Takes Birth in Tuṣita'

The fact that they have organized the sponsorship for the basic expenses of the translators but have decided to make the texts free for everyone to use is deeply heartening.
In order to ensure my mind never comes under the power of the self-cherishing attitude,
I must obtain control over my own mind.
Therefore, amongst all empowerments, the empowerment that gives me control over my mind is the best,
and I have received the most profound empowerment with this teaching.

It is an excellent project. But some of the translating teams continue to use misleading words like gnosis. Of course since these are just words it's not that big a problem but some of the material may propagate misleading ideas from philosophy that we already adhere to.

One should refrain from biased judgments and doubting in fathoming the Buddha and the Dharma of the Buddhas. Even though a dharma may be extremely difficult to believe, one should nonetheless maintain faith in it. Nagarjuna
