Duration of the Rebirth Process

Postby Moth » Fri Jan 20, 2012 4:51 pm

How long is the time-span between the moment of death and the descent into the womb (or the spontaneous rebirth)? Is this mentioned in the Suttas? I recall Bhikkhu Bodhi saying that it was instantaneous. Perhaps it is instantaneous in regards to observable time, but timeless or at least drawn out in regards to the subjective experience (similar to Einstein's theory on time dilation)...What do you think?
May you be happy. May you be a peace. May you be free from suffering.

I know the Tibetan Tradition teaches about the Bardo state, and its book of the dead is pretty dedicated to this state if my memory is correct, but the theravadin teachings don't have much upon this to my knowledge although I do believe there is some teachings upon it but don't know where to find them!

I do recall a thread some time ago about this which maybe of assistance if you do a search here!

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

In a book on that Bardo thing, I read it can take up to seven days?
"An important term for meditative absorption is samadhi. We often translate that as concentration, but that can suggest a certain stiffness. Perhaps unification is a better rendition, as samadhi means to bring together. Deep samadhi isn't at all stiff. It's a process of letting go of other things and coming to a unified experience." -

The abhidhamma insists it's instantaneous, while the references in the Nikayas are not conclusive - which is to say, they appear to be unconcerned with specifying the technicalities. I take this to be a clue as to how best to compartmentalize this line of inquiry, but to each their own.

Hello all,

There has been a previous discussion on ''Immediate Rebirth'' in the Classical Theravada sub-forum, here, with responses from Bhikkhus Bodhi, Dhammanando, and Gavesako:

.

This isn't a subject I speculate about myself - however "REBIRTH AND THE IN-BETWEEN STATE IN EARLY BUDDHISM" by Ajahn Sujato may be of interest to others:

with kind wishes,
