SUMMER RETREAT: June 23–July 13, 2013
THE TWENTY-ONE NAILS, PART 1
with Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and honored guest
H.H. Lungtok Tenpai Nyima, the 33rd Menri Trizin
During this year’s three-week Summer Retreat, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche will focus his teachings on one of the most esteemed dzogchen texts within the Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung, the Twenty-One Nails. It is among the innermost secret cycles of dzogchen, directly cutting through doubts about one’s natural state of mind by tracing the nature of mind back to its source.
Special Visit from His Holiness
We are pleased to share that His Holiness Lungtok Tenpai Nyima Rinpoche, the 33rd Menri Trizin will join Tenzin Rinpoche during part of the Summer Retreat. His Holiness is the spiritual head of the Tibetan Bon Buddhist lineage and abbot of Menri Monastery in Dolanji, India. He will offer teachings during the last few days of Week 2 of the retreat and the first few days of Week 3. He also will participate in the first part of a free full-day webcast on July 6, broadcast live from the summer retreat. (This will be on the last day of Week 2). His Holiness will give a special dzogchen initiation on July 7, the first day of Week 3. Participants are encouraged to accumulate long life mantras in honor of his visit.
The Twenty-One Nails
Over the three weeks of the summer retreat, Part 1 of the Twenty-One Nails will be taught, including the first through tenth nail. Tenzin Rinpoche will teach Part 2 of the Twenty-One Nails at Serenity Ridge the following summer, 2014.
The teachings of the Twenty-One Nails are a direct expression of enlightenment—our natural mind. Each nail describes this natural state from a different point of view. The views are called “nails” or “seals” because they stabilize the experiential understanding of the natural state. These teachings are said to have come directly from the primordial buddha, Küntu Zangpo, passed by mind-to-mind transmission to eight successive buddhas, and then transmitted orally to 24 human Bön lineage holders, all of whom were yogis and siddhas. It was first written down by Yangton Sherap Gyaltsen in the 11th century. These teachings have been transmitted in an unbroken succession down to our teachers of the present day: Yongdzin Sangye Tenzin, His Holiness Lungtok Tenpai Nyima, Yongdzin Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche, and Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche.
The teachings and practices presented at this retreat by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and His Holiness Lungtok Tenpai Nyima Rinpoche are an exceptional gateway for new students to experience both the wisdom and practicality of the Bön teachings. For those already connected to Bön, this is a precious opportunity to be with Tenzin Rinpoche and His Holiness and deepen your study and practice. We welcome everyone to join us at Serenity Ridge this summer.
