Question about sotapanna & sakadagami's next birth state

Postby faraway » Tue Jan 10, 2012 2:39 pm

If a sotapanna or sakadagami person died and then he born into human/deva realm, does:
1. he immediately become sotapanna/sakadagami from birth? (means his state of ariya is continued on next birth)
2. he born as puthujjana/non-ariya and must strive again to attain sotapanna/sakadagami? (means his state of ariya is reset on next birth)

Is there any reference in sutta regarding this?

If one's reached the stage of Stream-Entry (Sotapanna, the first of the 4 Fruits), then one will just have to be reborn at most 7 more times before attaining Nibbana. This means one cannot regress into lower states. S/he can only go forward with all the accumulated potentials of their previous lives..

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.
- Sutta Nipata 3.725

Think of the mind like an energy stream like electricity and the body like the light bulb. Electricity needs the light bulb to emitt light but it doesn't mean electricity is completely dead when the light bulb is broken. As long as there's another new light bulb, then light can be emitted again. This is why the Buddha and His Arahants diciples were able to recollect their previous countless lives. Without a continuous energy mind stream, it'd be impossible to do that:

"Now when the disciple of the noble ones has arrived at this purity of equanimity & mindfulness, he recollects his manifold past lives, i.e., one birth, two... five, ten... fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand, many eons of cosmic contraction, many eons of cosmic expansion, many eons of cosmic contraction & expansion: 'There I had such a name, belonged to such a clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure & pain, such the end of my life. Passing away from that state, I re-arose there. There too I had such a name, belonged to such a clan, had such an appearance. Such was my food, such my experience of pleasure & pain, such the end of my life. Passing away from that state, I re-arose here.' Thus he recollects his manifold past lives in their modes & details."
