His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinpoches Cremation

Post by T. Chokyi »

Plans have been made now and announced by email for the cremation of the Kudung of His Holiness Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche.

Palyul International has already notified many of the practitioners and Sanghas of the date and the month (May 2013), however the official announcement will be made sometime very soon through Palyul Ling, check at this site or write them:

If you wish to go in person to India, you'd have to obtain a "Protected Area Permit", read here for more information regarding accommodations in the area, please visit:

Just wondering, why is this happening now? It's been like four years since he passed, right?

Yes, thats right, March 27, 2009...IMHO because he was what is known as a living saint, or living Buddha, because of the tremendous effort and devotion toward his lineage and toward beings in general (his activities), he was considered like a father and a very great father at that, so because of this connection to thousands of beings and because he was "the heart" of this very large and important monastic institution, literally digging the foundation himself in the dirt many years ago to make the foundation of Namdroling...they wished to preserve his holy body for the benefit of beings for as long as they (heart sons and head Khenpos) considered it expedient. This is my opinion, because his body was the house of a living Buddha, and also the presence of that body would have the ability to bless those that are near, that is also my opinion, perhaps that is a matter of faith, and also a comfort or blessing for Palyul practitioners, this idea or heart felt feeling that he is with us. Some students were given bits of his robe for instance, this was considered a very great blessing, as it was worn by him and touched his holy body.

I can't put official information here because there isn't really any "teaching" related to this exact question given by the heart sons or Khenpos at this time that I know of, although someone else may have official statements, however Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche gave a teaching I was at in person right after His Holiness passed and that went into some detail about how Holiness body was preserved in salt, and kept cool etc... and basically how Khenchen personally took the many "signs"and many actitivities surrounding Holiness passing. There was a whole host of phenomena present from numerous rainbows, to circular rainbows coming down around Namdroling, to lotus flowers forming up in the Butter lamps to one of the Guru Rinpoche statues visage (outer appearance/face) changing. Khenchen addressed some of these signs, but this teaching was just pretty much for those there (present) and not for public consumption as far as I know... although if one wishes to see these things one can still do a search on the net and see pictures practitioners took. Many interpreted these signs to be Holiness communicating to practitioners as a display of his Holy mind. I was told by one of my close teachers to blend my mind with the mind of Holiness at the time of his passing, that was the practice for that time, which is the best advice imho for practitioners to do when one of your Gurus passes.

If you want more information, like an official statement or reason you can also, of course, write the email to the website or to one of the Khenchens.

"In just a single lifetime, His Holiness Penor Rinpoche accomplished an amazing amount on the outer level with the activities we can read about here on this website. Let it be said that there are accomplishments that are not listed here on the inner and secret levels as well."

http://www.palyul.org/eng_bio_hh10_parinirvana.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"When he came to the temple on Losar morning, 25 February, for the first time, the severity of his condition became evident to all and tears flowed freely, even among the highest practitioners."

There are webcasts happening, both "recorded" and "live" from India until and including May 25th from The Temple at Namdroling in Bylakuppe Karnataka, India.

So far the webcasts are not password protected but at some point for Namdroling's highest ceremonies it may go that way, then if you are interested you could contact the twitter feed for the password or very directly through the "Social Stream" on the ustream you can have contact (last link):

Namdroling Monastery is preparing for the cremation of the Holy Body of the late His Holiness Penor Rinpoche now, this is the live webcast schedule below, there will also be recordings. The live webcast will not be password protected, all are welcome. This is the schedule as it looks converted to Eastern Time from India time:

5/23 India Bangalore (India - Karnataka) Time is as follows:

5 AM: Puja begins with limited number of monks
7 AM: Gather at Kudung Chorton (the Stupa of the Holy Body)
8 AM: Actual Fire Offering of the Holy Body

Bangalore (India - Karnataka) Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 5:00:00 AM converted to Eastern Time on the world clock Time Zone Converter looks like this:

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 7:30:00 PM Eastern Time is 5AM on the 23rd at Namdroling

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 9:30:00 PM Eastern Time is 7AM on the 23rd at Namdroling

Wednesday, Today May 22, 2013 at 10:30:00 PM Eastern Time is 8AM on the 23rd at Namdroling

If you are in the Eastern Time Zone this is how you would calculate, if you are on the West Coast you would be 3 hours behind the East Coast calculations, if you are in the Mountain Time zone you are 2 hours behind Eastern Time.

If you want to double check the times for your specific area see this link for the time conversion:
http://www.timeanddate.com/ and under "Time Zones" click on the "Time Zone Converter"

Streamed live:

If you want to see without the ads, there is a free application called adblock its available at: adblockplus.org/‎
The App can block most of the commercials (but perhaps not all) which tend to interupt the flow of the stream.
