The claims of DN 26 and similar sources are, if taken literally, of no more relevance to our lives than is the Book Of Mormon or the musings of L.Ron Hubbard..They are bound up with entire world view that the Buddha inherited which shares a common ancestry with the Vedas and Upanishads. They were the philosophical currency of their time. They do not posit an ontological reality, and are of historical interest only.
The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

Well, this is only one possible opinion.

But still you can't be sure that this prophecy is not correct or that it can't be taken literally. Too detailed to be a fake, especially from the Buddha who didn't speak lie. And if we accept only those suttas that we like, then we come to the situation when we can dismiss absolutely anything from Dhamma and interpret it in whatever way we like for ouselves, that will fit our personal views and prejudices. And that is not how Dhamma should be grasped.

On the contrary that is exactly how Dhamma should be used. To address that which is arising now...in my consciousness..Not as a preoccupation with the cosmology of an ancient and defunct prescientific culture.
This is of course much more likely to be seen as an option if one does not hold on to views which seek to establish the Buddhas supposed " omniscience"...And see him instead as an awakened man. Everything else is padding.
The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

The Digha Nikaya is a heterogeneous work, which means that much of it was composed after the Parinibbana (this is true of the Nikayas generally, not just the DN). Given this, we know it reflects the milieu(x) of the ~60 years between the First and Second Councils, but it is unlikely to be wholly inviolate buddhavacana (especially DN sections II and III).

Still this doesn't prove that Buddha didn't speak DN 26. This sutta is found in all 3 versions of Digha Nikayas and a prophecy about Metteya is found in all buddhists schools. What is more, there are more suttas, in SN for example, where Buddha speaks about huge life-span of people like 30.000, 60.000, so on.. So this is not the one and only sutta that has such a material. Again, there are numerous suttas from different Nikayas where Buddha speaks about Wheel-Turning Monarch (which is the major theme in DN 26).

Plus to that I find highly unlikely that the anceint Sangha (which had hundreds of arahants) would distort Dhamma so manifestly.

If we don't agree this as a fact, then we don't have to agree with any sutta at all. No rebirth, no kamma, no nibbana, no kama-rupa-arupa worlds, nothing. Choose as you like. Don't believe in anything. This approach enables such an option. But this not a very wise one, according to MN 60 ,) But yes, we can still drop MN 60 too )))
