What is Khyentse Rinpoche wearing?

Post by Nilasarasvati »

I feel selfconscious that two of my posts now have been related to robes.
But I have to know...what is DKR wearing in this lecture? He's at Peking University in Beijing so I could understand why he wouldn't want to be in full Tibetan regalia...but is it a robe of an existing Chinese Buddhist order?

It looks like a sweater he's wearing as a scarf
Equanimity is the ground. Love is the moisture. Compassion is the seed. Bodhicitta is the result.

-Paraphrase of Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tsephel citing the Guhyasamaja Tantra

"All memories and thoughts are the union of emptiness and knowing, the Mind.
Without attachment, self-liberating, like a snake in a knot.
Through the qualities of meditating in that way,
Mental obscurations are purified and the dharmakaya is attained."

It looks like a shawl to me! In my limited experience, Rinpoche only wears formal 'Rinpoche' attire when giving empowerments and otherwise he wears all manner of attire, including some very colourful pants (I'll see if I can dig up a photo when I have time). He is also inclined to lament the conformity of dress adopted by most of us.

Rinpoche has looked quite fetching in his leather biker drag.
It''s true. He wears whatever he wishes, whenever he wishes.
He has more than a little of his father in his temperament.
He's also a rock-star filmmaker, not just the rebirth of Jamyang
Khyentse Wangpo and Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro...

He's wearing a typical Indian/Nepali man's shawl. No particular religious significance (at least not to me).

I've been trying to resist the temptation to correct myself but haven't suceeded. Of course, Rinpoche also wears formal attire at major teachings, pujas, etc, etc which, when you think about it, must take up a lot of his waking hours.

Thank you for starting this topic Nilasarasvarti, it's made me think quite a lot about conformity and why I do it, so not so trivial after all. Sadly, I haven't been able to find the 'pants' photo.

Oh, marvelous!
Someday I hope to meet him and feel desperately insecure more than ever before.
