Free Dharma E-books

Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

Here is a little sample from volume one of the Treasure Trove books:
On Virtue

Lao Tze said:
Those of superior virtue are not attached
to their virtue.
Those of inferior virtue are attached
to their virtue.
Those who are attached cannot be said
to have Way-virtue.

Those of “superior virtue”, cultivate the Bodhisattva Way but are not attached to the traces of practice. Although they do all kinds of good deeds, they don’t have any trace of doing them.

It’s said,
Doing good and cultivating virtue is just
doing what one should be doing.

You should absolutely not have arrogance or self-satisfaction in your minds. You shouldn’t think, “I am virtuous and good. I do good deeds.”

It’s said:
Doing good and wanting people to know
is not true good.
Doing evil and fearing that people will find out
is truly great evil.

Those who really cultivate the Bodhisattva Way are not attached to the things they do. They don’t become attached to any thing.
May all seek, find & follow the Path of Buddhas.
