What are these ceremonies about? Are they Buddhist or Shinto?
Didn't watch the first vid, but did watch the second one. It is of a saitou Goma on the side of Sakurajima volcano, in Kagoshima (southern Kyushu). It says that the guy is a DaiAjari (Mahacarya) connected with the Saifukuji temple- which is a Shingonshu temple.representing the power of the Tatagathas (faith-healing power), the Merit power of sentient beings, and the power of the dharma realm. Seishin is correct, it is a Shugendo practice and combines elements of Mikkyo (Esoteric Buddhism), Japanese folk beliefs, Daoism and Mountain Shintoism. It says that 5000 people gathered for world peace there. When they were splashing him with water- apparently it was up to 300 degrees Celsius within the fire because it was one the largest performed before(17metres)....something along those lines...sorry I have to rush off to uni work now. hope that helps!
