Rain soddens what is covered up,
It does not sodden what is open.
Therefore uncover what is covered
That the rain will not sodden it.

In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Freedom of expression, whether or not it hurts anyone's feelings, is the root of all other freedoms and all progress.

Take that freedom away, you get stagnation and all of the abuses of an orthodoxy.

People who are secure in their beliefs may not like those beliefs being criticized, but they don't feel the need to try silence people. As far as they concerned, they know what they know and that critic, pity them, is simply wrong.

One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Is it ever ok to criticize any Buddhist idea or technique?

The first thing one would surely need to do is establish whether the idea or technique can be aligned with the Suttas. This brings into play an important factor, that is using your own discernment which a lot of people within Buddhism seem reluctant to rely on. If I discern wrongly - so be it at, least it would MY error and not an error passed down to me through tradition or good PR. I have learned a lot from different poster's on Dhammawheel, these posters invariably use the suttas as the basis for their ideas and do not resort to linguistic gymnastics to make the suttas say something that they obviously do not say. Just to reiterate, people should rely heavily on their own discernment to see if something aligns with the suttas (with help & assistance from people who appear to you to accept/honour and espouse the suttas) - when it comes down to it the only person who is going to get you to enlightenment is yourself.

Is it ok to criticise any Buddhist Idea or technique?

Of course not!.

Except anyone supporting the Bhikkhuni ordination should be criticised and told of the 'bad kamma' they are generating for themselves.

Critically yours
