I've benefited greatly from meditation books that happened to be written by female authors. I've seen many women get many benefits by studying the dhamma and passing those benefits on to others. Making women second class in Asian Buddhism is a backward attitude depriving many people ( men and women ) of benefits.
In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

I started this thread to inquire if the "all bhikkhunis are junior to bhikkhu rule" can be rationalised on the basis that the bhikkhuni sangha is junior to the bhikkhu sangha, but I don't think this possibility was discussed. From the start, it all went into "sexist" arguments. When old bhikkhus are made junior to younger bhikkhus with more vassas, no one even considers the possibility that the Buddha is discriminating against the elderly . Rightly so, as seniority was clearly based on the sole criteria of length of time in the sangha. Why can't this rationale be applied to the 2 sanghas too? Is it not possible that our opinion on the junior bhikkhuni rule is already influenced by sexist arguments such that we cannot even consider other possibilities?

Then the Blessed One, picking up a tiny bit of dust with the tip of his fingernail, said to the monk, "There isn't even this much form...feeling...
perception...fabrications...consciousness that is constant, lasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will stay just as it is as long as eternity."

The rule has been shown to be very likely late, and not Buddhavacana.

the buddha rejected the caste system. he said a persons character is what makes them a brahman not there family tree. so i dont know if buddha woud just accept women as being inferior because it was part of indian culture at the time.
nothing can destroy a man who has lived a pure life
