Other Aspects of the Dhamma

Postby pelletboy » Mon Nov 21, 2011 5:18 am

Am I right that many come to the religion directly practicing meditation without a clear picture of why they practice it nor do they know the landscape of Samsara which provides more clarity as to where to move in life. Shouldn't meditation centers offer a briefing on these other things revealed in the Dhamma before practicing vipassana?

"Life is a struggle. Life will throw curveballs at you, it will humble you, it will attempt to break you down. And just when you think things are starting to look up, life will smack you back down with ruthless indifference..."

Then the Blessed One, picking up a tiny bit of dust with the tip of his fingernail, said to the monk, "There isn't even this much form...feeling...
perception...fabrications...consciousness that is constant, lasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will stay just as it is as long as eternity."

Our local "insight" group certainly doesn't consider meditation as an activity isolated from a general Buddhist background, and it seems rather clear from listening to talks from the Internet that none of the well-known western instructors do either.

In the absence of specifics this question really has no answer.
