something i've seen in most western rebirth discussions is that the people who are against literal rebirth all seem to mostly come from the same camp, ex christians, and their rejection of rebirth seems to hang on their rejection of their former faith. a sort of "i wont get fooled again" mentality. they feel they got duped once into believing in something they couldnt experience here and now and they want to avoid doing so again.

I have also heard some folks claim that the rebirth teachings were given only to encourage development of sila.
I think that if the Buddha believed that when the aggregates break up and die we are no longer subject to birth, he would have just said so. Why would a Buddha deceive us so we'll behave ourselves? There's other ways to promote morality. No one has said that in this thread specifically, but I hear it a lot.
