Jhana teaching engineers?

Postby Jhana4 » Wed Oct 12, 2011 11:15 am

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about his retreat. He mentioned that he heard of an engineer who claims to have mastered the jhanas and who offers secular courses on how to get into the jhanas. It seems odd, but assuming the guy knows what he is talking about and that he can teach I guess it is not a problem for me. To me it is a skill that would cost me money to receive instruction in whether I went on a religious retreat or something similar to a yoga vacation.

My friend mentioned that he thought the guy gave guarantees, which did bother me.

I don't think it is possible to guarantee someone will have an experience, so that came off as shady to me.

Has anyone heard of this guy and have an opinion?
In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Google doesn't give personal opinions from experience, which is more of what I am looking for. Sorry for not being clear.

I don't have any personal experience with him as a teacher, but his book "The Experience of Samadhi" is an excellent book on jhana. On this merit alone I would give him a chance as a teacher. I would be also be apprehensive about a "secular jhana master giving guarantees" so hopefully this is just a through-the-grapevine distortion.

There is a good sutta on describing jhana state - MN 127. Take a look and think if he is one who has attained it ;)

Jhana4,
Do you think Richard Shankman is the guy that your friend talked about?
