Are there any girls on this forum?

Postby Sacha G » Sun Sep 25, 2011 12:10 pm

Hi
I remember a time when you could have some posts from girls here. Now it seems even these few have disappeared (or am I wrong? It's hard to know the gender of the poster).
Do you know why there are so few girls here, and why (if true) they tend to disappear?
Thanx

He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.'
(Jhana Sutta - Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation)

Hi, I'm a woman not a girl - and I think there are several women who post here, though it does seem that the majority of posters are men.

Oddly enough I've noticed that in offline Vajrayana - and more recently Theravada centres - there seem to be more women than men. Perhaps that could indicate that women like to just get on with listening to the teachings and doing the practice rather than talking about it on their computers all the time!

:)

Hey
Sorry for "girls" but sometimes my English is poorer than I would like it to be.
I tend to think the "real" answer is that women are not that keen on theories and concepts. :reading:

In reading the scriptures, there are two kinds of mistakes:
One mistake is to cling to the literal text and miss the inner principles.
The second mistake is to recognize the principles but not apply them to your own mind, so that you waste time and just make them into causes of entanglement.

Yeah
Sorry but in French girl is employed sometimes in a familiar way, maybe as "dude"or "guy" is employed for men. This is what I meant, but it sounds odd in English, I confess.
I was unsure about female, since in French, in means an "animal female"
What's more, concerning the interest of women for buddhism as a technical subject, I must say I never met any discussing the subject of the 5 aggregates, the 12 links etc (apart maybe from my wife, who I brainwashed :stirthepot: ). I've even heard of women complaining that they'd like to talk of meditation, but as soon as they find themselves among other women they tend to speak of social relations and psychological issues. This might sound like a stereotype but it's my experience anyway. It doesn't mean this has a negative impact on their practice.

Then the Blessed One, picking up a tiny bit of dust with the tip of his fingernail, said to the monk, "There isn't even this much form...feeling...
perception...fabrications...consciousness that is constant, lasting, eternal, not subject to change, that will stay just as it is as long as eternity."

Greetings,

Male or female, you're all kalyana-mittas to me.

Hi Sacha, you aren't alone. Maybe the forum is a reflection of the sanghas that they are frequently more males than females?

I just came across a news article about gender equality in buddhist monasteries that may be of interest to you :namaste:

All beings like yourself are responsible for their own actions. Suffering or happiness is created through one's relationship to experience, not by experience itself. Although I wish only the best for you, I know that your happiness or unhappiness depends on your actions, not on my wishes for you.
May you not be caught in reactivity.
