Can a stream-enterer attain arahantship without a teacher?

Postby Stiphan » Fri Sep 16, 2011 12:54 pm

Can a stream-enterer, in his lives after the one when he became sotapanna, attain arahantship without a teacher, or is he bound to meet a teacher, and by training under his guidance attain final Nibbana?

In other words, does a stream-enterer need a teacher in order to become enlightened? Or is it the case, that, since he has already had a glimpse of Nibbana, he can do it on his own?

Well, Siddharta Gautama did it probably, so I guess it is possible...

I see no obstacle, for example, why sotapanna can't become a pacceka-buddha in some distant future, but before coming of Metteya.. 8-)

I am talking about a stream-enterer becoming an Arahant, not becoming a Buddha or a paccekabuddha.

Thanks Alex for the reference. The Suttas seem rather clear that after stream entry Arahantship is assured.

According to the Theravada interpretation a stream entrant can not become a Buddha or Paccekabuddha, he/she becomes an Arahant.
Also note that before his enlightenment the Buddha was not a stream entrant.

I dont think its a stupid question Stefan.
I think its a question that elicits a number of opinions masquerading as facts from those unqualified to answer it. i.e. all of us.
