greetings from NYC & Bolivia y pido la informacíon

Post by Asoka1944 »

Hello,
This is my first post, and in it I would like to request information regarding Buddhist practice centers in Bolivia, especially in Cochabamba where I intend to spend more than three months this year. I have practiced Zen and Theravadan Buddhist forms, but am now practicing in a more eclectic Chinese Buddhist environment. Any info, greatly appreciated. Thanks. And below the Spanish version as best I can do.
with metta,
Michael (Buddharūci)

Hola!
Muchisimas gracias. (Lo siento por el español tan malo.)

Hi Michael. It doesn't seem easy to find the info you are looking for. I did a few google searches and found http://www.zen-deshimaru.com/es/dojos/d ... cochabamba. "Budismo" and "Cochabamba" or "Bolivia" seemed to turn up the best results but maybe you've already tried this. Mi espanol is muy malo tambien.

Yes, that's what I thought. Hoped someone
would have better information first hand.
I'll just have to introduce the Dharma to
my circle of friends as best I can. Meditation
practice in a Buddhist context, at least.
Thanks for replying to my post! By the way,
where are you located? In SA, perhaps?

No, I'm not based in SA but I do love the spanish language and also the DW tradition of welcoming newcomers. Good luck with helping your friends make a connection to the dharma.

Hi, Welcome to DharmaWheel! I wish you all the best in your travels (wish I had more to offer). Would you mind posting pictures if you get a chance? I'd love to visit Bolivia...

Hi,
Thank you everyone, and I will surely post some pictures when I am in Bolivia. I am also very interested in Chinese Gung Fu tea, and I find that the people throughout Latin America take to it like fish to water, especially the kids. So, I suspect they will also take to the Buddha Dharma provided it is not presented as an alternative to their own practiced religions. I would prefer to practice with an established community, but if there is none, I'm it. I see that Mexico and Brazil have Buddhist communities, but Bolivia is another case.

Sure. I know there are practitioners and centers in Peru, Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela too. (Tashigar is a significant center: Cordoba, Argentina) Who knows what's going on in between?

I look forward to hearing more about your adventures.

I'll look forward to the photos too. From what I've read Central and South America have very strong spiritual traditions that Catholicism was able to build on. Day of the Dead in Mexico looks amazing! I'm sure Buddhism has appeal to a certain section of the population just as it does elsewhere.

Hi again,

Sadly, the history of the Church and the Spanish
occupation are not pretty, to say the least. In
Guatemala, I found it particularly interesting
to see how the ancient Maya religious forms
were practiced separate from, but in proximity
to, the. churches -- to the side and on the steps
of the church building in many cases. Day of the
dead is amazing, as you say. And I'm sure you
are right about the appeal of Buddhism as well.
Right now I am putting a lot of energy into
putting the world of work behind me after 35
years of gainful employment in the same agency.
Retirement in February.

PS: How do I post so that my post is not

Hi,
I notice that you pulled a post or two that you might have thought off topic. This causes me to reflect yet again on the old enemy with whom I habitually battle, idle and hurtful talk. The Buddha I want to be is not always the Buddha whose mouth or pen gets into gear far earlier than his brain. I all too often speak before I think, so to speak. Let us perhaps take this discussion, if such it be, elsewhere, since it's gone beyond introduction.
Michael
