Greetings from Italy

Postby paulbear » Thu Jan 10, 2013 3:19 pm

My name is Paul and I'm very very new to Buddhism, I know that so far it's resonating with me so I'll continue. I seem to gravitate towards the teachings of Mahayana. I would like to know if anyone could recommend a Monastery or retreat center in Northern Italy (Emilia Romagna region) where I could meet with teachers and like minded individuals. It's been quite a challenge being an American trying to find a Monastery or Mediation Center do to the fact that my Italian is elementary. I really appreciate any advice :) Peace and blessings Paul

Dear Paul welcome to Dharma Wheel from your neighbour over here in Greece!

There is a plethora of top notch Buddhist centre in Italy, you will be guaranteed to find something that fits your needs. Check them all out and be careful, there are plently of hucksters out there (and in here ;) ).

I don't know how far you are from Milano, but Raten Ghepeling is an excellent centre. Its main teacher is Thamtog Rinpoche, currently serving as the abbot of HH Dalai Lama's monastery in Dharamsala, but there is a younger lama who teaches when he is not there. FPMT has a centre in Padova called Centro Tara Chittamani with excellent visiting geshes and lamas but I'm not sure how far that is from you.
In fact, I am in Padova at the moment as Geshe Sonam is teaching at the centre. Today is the last day of double Italian/English translation as an Italian translator from Tibetan will arrive for the Saturday/Sunday teachings.
