13 Golden Dharmas of the Sakya-pa, Sep 24-26, 2010

Post by Mr. G »

This very special series of 13 empowerments over a three-day period will be offered by Lama Kunga Rinpoche on Friday, Sept. 24, Saturday Sept. 25 and Sunday Sept. 26. The cost will be $400 for registration before Aug 1st and $450 after Aug. 1st. This will include the Hevajra Empowerment on Sep 23, which is a prerequisite for receiving the 13 Golden Dharma series (if you haven’t previously received a Hevajra or Cakrasamvara empowerment from a Sakya Lama).

I have already sent an email to Lama Kunga's group requesting additional information.

Sounds like a plan.

Hey all,

I'm attempting to contact the representatives for Lama Kunga Rinpoche with some questions I have, and have not received a response from the numerous email contacts on the website.

Would anyone be able to assist?

I'll give it a shot.

BTW - this has to be at least three days but it is schedules 24-26 September (well, that will be three days ....). Two days for Hevajra .... Maybe I misread it and they are prepending Hevajra or Chakrasamvara to the rest of the program and not counting the two days for that empowerment (in which case it's 22-26 September or so).

Hi Kirt,

Here were the questions I wrote them:

1. Which 13 deities will initiation be given on?
2. Is this strictly an empowerment? Will there be a reading transmission (Lung) as well?
3. Will teachings be given on the correct pronunciation of mantras, and use of
hand mudras?
4. If there is a reading transmission, will sadhanas be available for purchase?

Any help would be really appreciated.

I'll ask, but ....
mr. gordo wrote: Here were the questions I wrote them:

The website specifically redirects to Jeff Watt's writeup so I'm pretty sure they will be those (although there can be some variation can't there?).
2. Is this strictly an empowerment? Will there be a reading transmission (Lung) as well?
What Sakya empowerments have you attended that usually had reading transmissions?
3. Will teachings be given on the correct pronunciation of mantras, and use of hand mudras?
I doubt it - I've only seen this done once or twice outside of a (short) retreat setting.
4. If there is a reading transmission, will sadhanas be available for purchase?
Mr. Gordo?! What Sakya place charges for sadhanas? I suppose it could happen ....

Anyway .... I'll give it my best shot this week.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to find out. The exact ones to be given.
What Sakya empowerments have you attended that usually had reading transmissions?
Off the top of my head, a couple of them....I didn't that was unusual.

Mr. Gordo?! What Sakya place charges for sadhanas? I suppose it could happen

Really? This occurs as everyone I've gone too.

Though, I think the question I was most concerned with was a review on the sadhana practice, mantra pronunciation, and mudras. Well, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Reading transmission is usually not done at least not in the US.

WOW! Is this a West Coast thing?

They only have 3 days according to the schedule to do Hevajra and 13 other empowerments (and apparently Naro Khechara is one of them and that usually takes 4 hours in the zippy version although I suppose that could be zipped along further) so they really won't have time to go over the sadhanas or mudras, however I will ask.

Something I just thought about - this has to be limited to groups of 21 students (Hevajra and Naro Khechara can only be given to 21 new students at a time) and they only have time for 1 group.

Hi Mr. Gordo,

Yes, I can try to help. Would you be so kind as to PM me the contact information?
Do you know if Lama Jay will be there?

Hmm...perhaps I'm thinking of something else?

LOL. Nah...I've paid in NJ once....though I've never had to do so for upstate NY. Cali, yes.

Ah, I think that's my main concern....or perhaps if I could grab a senior student just to make sure I'm pronouncing the mantra's correctly.

Any help would be great Kirt!

Thanks!

So I'm about 90% sure I'll be able to make it to this. I went to Hotels.com and looked for the closest place to the center, and it's about 2.5 miles away. Does anyone know how the area in Kensington is? I don't mind walking, but have heard that some parts in Kensington are bad.

Does anyone here go to Lama Kunga's center? On the 13 Golden Dharmas flyer it says that it's a 5-10 min. drive to restaurants and stores from the center. I was hoping to avoid the costs of renting a car and walk most everywhere. :(

Also their paypal link to the event isn't working, though the one in the sidebar is....and no one has responded to the emails I've sent to them. :(

Lama Kunga's center is in the hills.....Kensington is in a fairly residential neighborhood, and you'd have to walk down to Berkeley's busier streets for meals. But it's a very short drive...I'd think you'd be able to catch a ride with fellow students for meals.
