Luck?

Post by xtracorrupt »

I don't understand how luck is possible. Can somebody give me an example please?
Existence can be normal.
Ex:a Apple tree is a apple tree
Ex:Michael is Michael, Michael is who Michael is

Existence can be conditioned.
Ex: Apple tree is apple tree if apple tree grows
Ex: Michael is Michael if Michael is a king
Ex: Michael is Michael if Michael is walking
Ex: Michael is Michael if Michael is not walking

Existence can be unconditioned
Ex: Apple is apple tree once apple tree is grown for 50 weeks
Ex: Michael is Michael once Michael is a king
Ex: Michael is content Michael once Michael is walking
Ex: Michael is discontent Michael once Michael is walking.

There is no luck, just karma.

The more you practice, the luckier you get.

That's actually true of golf and similar activities, in a pretty obvious way.
It's also true (IMHO) of dharma practice, but in non-obvious ways.

I suppose it depends on whether you are looking for a relative or absolute answer. From a practical point of view, as long as we have any uncertainty about the course of future events, there is room for unpredictability and, by extension, luck--as in apparently beating the odds, or seemingly random good or bad future outcomes.

The Sanskrit word, "punya" is often translated by the English word ‘merit’ but it can be translated as lucky (A Practical Sanskrit Dictionary, p. 164). According to the Buddha, luck or punya is based upon giving (dâna), spiritual cultivation (shîla) and contemplation (bhâvana). When taken together, the three add up to strengething our powers of deliberation or choice. As a result of this strengething, we find that our choices often lead to good fortune.

If occurrence is unnecessary and occurrence occurs because of desire for occurrence

then occurrence occurring without it's desire is impossible?

It does not need to happen, therefore it must be desired?

So, occurrence occurring from chance(luck) does not make sense if occurrence is dependent of desire?

Does this logic make sense?

Can something happen without reason?

All these questions certainly have a reason qua cause :sage:

Not really, well, the questions themselves don't make much sense. Try to express them in a less complicated manner or give an example.
Can something happen without reason?
Something cannot arise without it being based in causes and conditions. The "reason" for something "happening" are the causes and conditions that caused it to happen. If things could just happen without a basis in causes and conditions then they would have only two modes of being: existence and non-existence. But we see clearly that this is never the case so...
