Happy Brithday!
He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.'
(Jhana Sutta - Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation)

Happy Birthday James!
Whatever you do, I hope its a cracker of a day!
“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.
- Sutta Nipata 3.725

Thanks everyone!
I'm at the thai forest monastery in Wellington, so
I got up at 4.30am, did puja, meditated, and only at breakfast did I remember it is my birthday.

I spent the work period kappying fallen trees, brought down by the heavy snow last night.
one of the monks couldn't get to his hut last night due to the snow, and the track being blocked by fallen trees, and had to sleep on the floor of the monastery office.

The monks chanted for me at lunch, that was nice, but Ajahn said it only works if you believe it has an effect. He winked at me secretly, as if to imply that he didn't believe it worked either.
Then,
saturated with joy,
you will put an end to suffering and stress.
