We normally celebrate my birthday on Christmas since the office at our business is closed (actual birth date is Dec. 26 at 1 am). We needed a new car in our household since we have a new driver soon with our daughter learning to drive, so since this was the big 5-O, we decided to get a yellow lotus with a customized license plate:

The Mahayana spelling "Dharma" was already taken but I prefer the Pali spelling anyway.

Dear David,

So today it's your birthday...well HAPPY BIRTHDAY again and I love your new COOL LOTUS...the color really matchs your shirt!!
Is the car for your daughter? ...oh I bet she jumps up/down with joy...lucky girl

Dear David.... Oh please don't forget to answer my member's question about LIST # 462-# 463...here's the question:
List no. 462
The Nine Jhanas (meditative absorptions, sometimes listed as the Four Jhanas and the formless realms):

1. Delightful Sensations
2. Joy
3. Contentment
4. Utter peacefulness
5. Infinity of space
6. Infinity of consciousness
7. No-thingness
8. Neither perception nor non-perception
9. Cessation
(from Anguttara Nikaya 9.36)
------------
(Quote) Hi Tep,

you wrote:

( D: question whether the 4th jhana includes as well rupa and arupa jhanas ,i.e.
Jhana 1-4 rupa + jhana 4 = 4 a,b,c,d arupa. 9 arupa but not jhana anymore.)

T: I think the 4th jhaana is still a ruupa jhaana, Dieter. What do you refer to
as " 4 a,b,c,d arupa."?

D: I can't remember to have read about the 5th, 6th,7th Jhana
so I assume entering the 4th Jhana includes all rupa Jhana and in its
perfection arupa Jhana , i.e. lik 4 a, b , c,..

>D: D.N.S. quotes A.N. , pls check the Pali , I am a bit far from my usual
sources ...

T: Okay. I have the Pali for you below. Beyond the first paragraph I do not see
any other useful information. Help is on the way from David Snyder since Yawares
will ask him to explain!
AN 9.36 PTS: A iv 422 Jhana Sutta: Mental Absorption

D: yes, good to ask him . As it seems , what appears as a quotation of the
sutta is an incorrect interpretation .

If you want to answer here...that's fine, I can copy and post at my SD.

Thank you very much,
yawares

Happy Birthday David.

I guess this means that now you are one of the few Buddhists who can drive a car in full lotus position hm?
